Fixit: What’s the best plan for used extinguisher?
Saturday, March 17th, 2007Link: Fixit: What’s the best plan for used extinguisher?.
Q)) I had a small kitchen fire and used a fire extinguisher to put it out. It now shows that it’s empty, but I’m not sure it is. What do I do with it?
A ))Fire extinguishers are either disposable or rechargeable.
If you can’t find an expiration date on the extinguisher, it’s probably the disposable type. Generally, you can put disposable fire extinguishers in the trash.
They contain nothing toxic. But contact your county waste management office for specific information. If you think it is the rechargeable type, contact a company that sells and services fire extinguishers to be sure. (Companies are listed in yellow-page directories.)
Both types of extinguisher have a shelf life.
When you replace a fire extinguisher, experts recommend buying rechargeable units. They’re not expensive and if you have them serviced annually you’ll know they’ll work when needed.
